Hilton Head in August attracts many families with children, who flock to the island’s beaches and family-friendly resorts every summer. If you are not tied to the school vacation schedule, it can be best to choose a different time of year to visit, when the weather is less oppressive and the crowds are typically smaller.
For the first couple of weeks of August, it is still peak season at Hilton Head, with a great many visitors and prices to match. From the middle of the month, most local schools are back in session and visitor levels drop off, although the biggest fall in crowds comes after Labor Day.
Although the breezes off the ocean can cool things down a little, August is generally a very hot and humid month, with air temperatures reaching into the 90s and the very warm ocean offering little respite. Afternoon thunderstorms and rain showers are common, and there is a risk of hurricanes through into fall.
Things to do in Hilton Head in August are mostly centered around the island’s miles of sandy beaches: swimming, watersports such as kayaking, jet skiing and parasailing, or just relaxing on the beach or by the pool. Hiking, biking and golfing are a possibility during the cooler mornings and evenings.
