Airports Near Hilton Head Island, SC


The closest airport to Hilton Head, SC is its own airport, Hilton Head Island Airport, located toward the northern end of the island and within a few miles of most of its resorts and vacation accommodation.

Hilton Head Airport offers a small selection of flights (some of which only operate seasonally, see below) to big hub airports, making it a convenient choice if you are visiting from one of those cities or do not mind taking a connecting flight.

The nearest major airport to Hilton Head is Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, around 35 miles away, which receives non-stop flights from dozens of domestic cities including several large hub airports. For many visitors to Hilton Head, this is the most convenient airport to fly to.

If you are traveling from abroad or from a city not served by these airports and want to fly non-stop, the main options are either Charlotte Douglas International Airport or Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, 250 miles and 275 miles away respectively.

Hilton Head’s own small airport, located to its northern end and within easy reach by taxi or rideshare (or rental vehicle) of destinations across the island and in nearby communities, has expanded its offerings in recent years.

Hilton Head now offers daily year-round scheduled flights to several major hub airports, offering the possibility of connecting flights to almost anywhere. A few extra routes are also offered seasonally, although these routes often operate on a much less frequent schedule.

Some flights only operate seasonally.

The easiest way to get from Charleston Airport to Hilton Head is to drive. In good traffic, it should take about two hours or so.

If you won’t be driving, it should be possible (if expensive) to make the trip by taxi, for which an advance reservation is highly advisable. You might find an Uber or Lyft driver willing to take you, but don’t depend upon it.

Bus service between Charleston and Hilton Head is not currently available.

Charlotte Douglas is a major international airport and a flight hub for American Airlines, with services to and from 170+ cities across the United States, Europe, Central America and the Caribbean.

The main advantage of flying into Charlotte is likely to be the cost saving and the greater range of flight times and airlines over a connecting flight to Hilton Head or Savannah.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, about 4-5 hours drive from Hilton Head, is another acceptable option for getting to the island if you were planning to rent a car for your trip and want to either fly with a specific airline or avoid having to make a connection.

Flights to Atlanta Airport, which is one of the biggest airports in the world, are received from hundreds of domestic and international locations, including the UK and mainland Europe, Central America and the Caribbean, and a handful of other large cities in South America, Africa and Asia.

The easiest way to travel from Atlanta Airport to Hilton Head is by car. Many rental agencies are represented at the airport. Most rental agencies do not restrict travel out of state (in this case from Georgia into South Carolina) but it is best to check.

The quickest route is usually to take the I-75 out of Atlanta, then following the I-16 into Savannah. From there, take the I-95 northward, exiting onto US-278 (which will take you the rest of the way to Hilton Head) on the outskirts of Hardeeville, SC.

If you won’t be driving, it is also possible to take a Greyhound bus from Atlanta Airport to Savannah and to complete your journey to Hilton Head Island by taxi or rideshare. A more expensive option is a pre-booked car service, providing private transport from Atlanta to Hilton Head.
