September, together with May and October, is one of the best months of the year to visit Hilton Head. Most of the crowds leave the island after Labor Day, but very warm and usually sunny weather persists through the month, and the full range of activities and watersports remains available.
The island is still busy in September, especially over weekends, but hotel and rental prices are generally far lower than during the summer peak. This time of year is very popular with older visitors, with far fewer families than during the spring and summer months.
The weather in September is very warm but not as oppressive as summer. Temperatures are usually at least in the upper 70s to 80s well into October, with humidity decreasing through the month.
September events include the Hilton Head Island Shrimp Festival, weekly fall concerts at Shelter Cove Harbour, plus fall festivals, arts events and more.
Other things to do in Hilton Head in September include most summertime activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, dolphin-watching tours, sunbathing and ocean swimming, plus hiking, biking and golfing at cooler times of the day.
Historical and nature tours of the island are available year-round, with additional historic attractions in nearby Bluffton, at Beaufort and St Helena Island, and further afield in Savannah, any or all of which make for great day trips out of Hilton head.
