Hilton Head in July is hot, crowded and expensive — this is the peak season for summer family vacations. For this reason, many visitors who have a choice in which time of year to visit prefer the more clement months of late spring and early fall.
July 4th weekend is very busy on Hilton Head, with the island’s fireworks displays attracting enormous crowds. This is generally about the busiest month, and advance reservations, whether for restaurants, accommodation, or even for many activities, are a necessity throughout July.
The hot and humid July weather is tempered a little by cooling breezes off the ocean, but in general you can expect highs from the upper 80s into the 90s and oppressive humidity well into the night. Rain is common this month, usually during pop-up afternoon thunderstorms and rain showers, typically lasting no more than 30 minutes.
Hilton Head activities in July are mostly centered around the beach, the pool, and the ocean. The island offers a wide range of water sports such as kayaking, paddleboarding, wake sports, jetski rentals, parasailing and more. Dolphin tours and boat charters to explore the nearby creeks and marshes are another very popular thing to do.
During cooler times of the day, hiking in Hilton Head’s nature reserves or biking along its miles of bike paths are a fun activity; golf is also available, though likewise best timed for the cooler early morning.
