December in Savannah, despite the unpredictable weather, is often an enjoyable time of year in the city. Most of its must-see sights have year-round appeal, and the many December events in Savannah (mostly of the festive variety) mean that there is always a choice of things to do.
The city’s holiday season begins right after Thanksgiving. From then through December, there are holiday light shows and musical and theatrical performances nearly every day.
Special holiday events are offered at several Savannah and Tybee Island historic houses and museums, usually providing an insight into historical Christmas traditions in the South. Outdoor events include Christmas parades in downtown Savannah and at Tybee, plus other seasonal family-oriented celebrations at City Market and on River Street.
If the weather is cooler, December’s smaller crowds make this an ideal time to visit a historic house or museum, even if there are no special events on. Or, you could browse in one of Savannah’s dozens of art galleries or antiques stores.
Even in December, though, Savannah’s mild subtropical climate can make for many beautiful, sunny days perfect for outdoor sightseeing downtown, a trip to Bonaventure Cemetery, or an excursion out into Georgia's lowcountry.
