Traveling Between Savannah & Macon, GA

The historic Georgia cities of Savannah and Macon are just about accessible as day trips from each other, with both cities offering a range of tourist attractions and cultural sites. Savannah, especially, is much visited for its famous Historic District, with exceptional architecture and dozens of beautiful, shaded parks and squares.

The distance between Macon and Savannah is around 166 miles, with drive time of a little over two hours in ideal traffic. In more usual traffic, the trip can take an extra 30 minutes or so. From Savannah Airport to Macon is 163 miles, with similar travel time.

Although there is unfortunately no current train service between Savannah and Macon, the bus is an excellent alternative transport option if you don’t want to drive. Several direct services operate daily, with travel time of around two and a half hours.

How Far Is Macon, GA From Savannah?

The distance from Macon to Savannah is around 166 miles, taking the I-16 the whole way between the two cities.

In ideal traffic, it is possible to complete the trip in not too much more than two hours, although typical drive time is around two and a half hours, excluding any stops along the way. In heavy traffic, travel time can increase to around three hours.

Macon To Savannah By Bus

There are 3-4 daily bus services between Savannah and Macon, with two buses departing Savannah in the morning and two in the early evening. The journey takes roughly two and a half hours. An economy ticket costs from $29-$42 each way.

There are 4 daily bus services between Macon and Savannah, with two services leaving in the morning, one in the afternoon, and another at night. An economy ticket costs from $26-$36 each way.

In the Macon to Savannah direction, the bus is a reasonably convenient means of transport for day trip travel, with morning buses to Savannah and evening buses back to Macon allowing an afternoon in Savannah. If you want a full day in the city, you will have make a very early start!

It is also possible to make a day trip from Savannah to Macon by bus, with either an early- or a mid-morning bus to Macon. The return trips are less suitably timed, however, so you will either have to start back mid afternoon or stay in Macon until quite late.

Savannah’s Greyhound station is located immediately west of downtown, at 610 West Oglethorpe Avenue. Connections to local bus services are available from the station, and many Historic District locations are easily accessible on foot. Taxi and rideshare services are also available.

Macon’s bus station is at 200 Cherry Street, adjacent to downtown Macon. Many of the city’s sights are within walking distance, and connections are available at the station to local bus services. Taxi and rideshare services are also available.

Macon To Savannah By Train

It is not currently possible to travel between Savannah and Macon by train, as Macon does not receive passenger rail service.

There has been some discussion of restoring a former passenger train service between Atlanta and Savannah, with a stop in Macon, but no progress toward that goal has yet been made.
