Tybee Island in May is usually sunny and comparatively dry. This is a great time of year to visit the island, when the weather is very warm but without being too hot.
May also marks the start of the family vacation season in Tybee, with weekend crowds increasing through the month, and especially large numbers of visitors around the Memorial Day Weekend. The first week or so of May, and weekdays, are typically quieter.
Tybee Island events in May usually include the SCAD Sand Arts Festival sand sculpture contest, the Tybee Island Tour of Homes, and the Tybee Beach Bum Parade. There is also a weekly farmers market at the lighthouse, and there are often local music and other performances scheduled through the month too.
Other things to do in Tybee Island in May include essentially all the island has to offer: kayaking, paddle boarding and other watersports, boat tours, dolphin watching, and of course, the beach. Southerners may still find the water a little brisk until the end of May, but visitors from cooler places often find it warm enough throughout the month.
There is also the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum, Fort Pulaski, the Tybee Marine Science Center, local state parks and wildlife refuges, or day trips to Savannah or nearby Bluffton or Beaufort.
