Tybee Island in August is hot and humid. Daytime temperatures are usually very high – often into the 90s – without much respite overnight, but the breeze off the ocean makes it bearable. Temperatures often cool off a little during the last two weeks of August, but don't depend on it!
Although Tybee Island is generally quite crowded throughout the summer months (particularly on weekends when it also receives a lot of day trip visits), visitor numbers do fall during August, as most local schools start back this month. Weekday crowds, in particular, decline throughout the month, although visitor numbers pick up again for Labor Day weekend.
Tybee Island events in August are fairly thin on the ground, but there is still the weekly farmers market at the Tybee Island Lighthouse, and there is also usually a fee-free day this month at nearby Fort Pulaski, and local musical and other performances to enjoy.
Things to do in Tybee Island in August mostly revolve around the beach and the water – swimming, water sports, kayaking, paddle boarding and so on – although there are several other attractions on and near the island.
Boat tours are popular activities, as are trips to neighboring Little Tybee Island. Fort Pulaski and Fort Jackson are both close by (the latter is nearer to Savannah), and on Tybee itself are the historic lighthouse and the Tybee Marine Science Center. As with the other summer months in Tybee Island, active recreation is best confined to the slightly cooler mornings and evenings.
