Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is the book that put Savannah on the map. Published in 1994, Midnight is reporter John Berendt’s non-fiction account of his 1980s visit to Savannah, focused on the then-sensational killing of a local young man, Danny Hansford (Billy Hanson in the book) by the well-known preservationist Jim Williams.
The book drew millions of visitors to Savannah, a trend consolidated by the 1997 movie of the same name, and several local tour guides still offer tours of the locations and events mentioned in the book and film.
Other tours focus more generally on Savannah’s film industry and the locations used in its most well-known movies. Recently, Georgia edged out California to become the number one state for the production of feature films in the United States, and the list of movies filmed on location in Savannah and its vicinity is increasing every year. You might even see one being made when you visit!
