Civil War Tours In Savannah, GA

The Confederate Memorial in Forsyth Park, Savannah, GA, seen through moss-covered live oaks.

The Civil War was one of the most significant events in Savannah’s history, profoundly impacting the lives of all its inhabitants.

Famously spared the destruction visited upon the cities of upper and central Georgia by General Sherman and his troops, Savannah emerged from that war physically almost unscathed. Socially and economically, however, the city was changed forever.

Savannah’s guides offer a selection of tours focused on the city’s history in the Civil War, generally touching on the experiences of citizens in the run up to and during the war; the role Savannah played as a Confederate port, and nearby military engagements; and Sherman’s March to the Sea and occupation of Savannah in the later stages of the war.

For a closer focus on the experience of enslavement in Savannah and the changes freedom brought, several tours dedicated to the city’s African-American history are also available.
