The small city of Darien, near the mouth of the Altamaha River, is ideally situated for exploring the Georgia coast’s barrier islands and the network of river islands and creeks of the lower Altamaha.
Local tour companies offer a variety of guided kayak excursions in the area, mostly focused on the wildlife and scenery of the Altamaha River and the swamps and old rice fields of the Altamaha Wildlife Management Area.
For the most part, these are longer trips, but the shorter paddles (around three hours in length) should usually be suitable for people without much experience of the sport.
If you are looking for a shorter introduction to kayaking, several tours of around an hour and a half or so are available out of nearby St Simons Island.
