Savannah In December

Night view of streetcar tracks on Savannah, GA's cobbled River Street, with illuminated shops and restaurants.

Despite the colder days and dark evenings, December can be a great time of year to visit Savannah.

The city’s holiday season begins right after Thanksgiving. From then through December, there are holiday light shows and musical and theatrical performances nearly every day.

Special holiday events are offered at several Savannah and Tybee Island historic houses and museums, usually providing an insight into historical Christmas traditions in the South. Outdoor events include Christmas parades in downtown Savannah and at Tybee, plus other seasonal family-oriented celebrations at City Market and on River Street.

If the weather is cooler, December's smaller crowds make this an ideal time to visit a historic house or museum, even if there are no special events on. Or, you could browse in one of Savannah's dozens of art galleries or antiques stores.

Even in December, though, Savannah's mild subtropical climate can make for many beautiful, sunny days perfect for outdoor sightseeing downtown, a trip to Bonaventure Cemetery, or an excursion out into Georgia's lowcountry.
